Sorrow and Bliss is a perfect read for fans of Heartburn by Nora Ephron or Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney. It doesn’t shy away from depicting the harsh reality of living with a mental health condition (which is never outwardly named) but offers hope at the end when Martha can rebuild her life, even as she is approaching her forties. But what’s so refreshing about this book is that it doesn’t paint it a rosy light it’s there for all of us to see. Often, we find these conversations difficult, which is understandable as there’s still a huge stigma surrounding mental health. We talk a lot about mental health now and how important it is to say how we’re feeling. This ray of sunshine keeps the novel from being entirely dark. ![]() ![]() ![]() Martha’s relationship with her sister, Ingrid, is beautifully witty and full of hope. It’s sad and brutal in so many ways - but is also uplifting. This book is about navigating life with a severe mental illness and how it intertwines with our relationships, careers and family members. When she finally gets together with Patrick, who has been in love with her since she was fourteen, everything gets more complicated.Īfter finding out more about her mental illness and the medication she is on, Martha discovers that she could have had children by the age of forty, which serves as a massive blow to her relationship with Patrick. She knows she can never have children due to the medication she has been put on, but nothing in her life ever feels right. Martha has always known there is something wrong with her, but putting the finger on what it is - is another matter. The novel has a relatively simple premise in that it follows the life of Martha over many years, but it will keep hooks in you right after you finish the final page. Every so often, you come across a book that makes you go ‘wow.’ For me, that was Sorrow and Bliss. ![]()
